A friend and I were served lunch by a youngish woman in a City wine bar a couple of years ago.
I called her over and thanked her personally at the end as I thought she'd been good at her job.
She immediately burst into tears.
Long story short it turns out she'd experienced weeks of what I guess you'd have to call abuse from
wealthy entitled morons at their Christmas parties
(it was just before Christmas.)
I don't know if any of it was sexual harassment
but in any case it wasn't pleasant.
So it seems that one person simply
showing a bit of courtesy and appreciation
kind of reminded her of the humanity
she had since been denied.
Ever since I always try to remember
the human needs of those who serve.
