The Walnut Tree

The Walnut Tree

The Walnut (The name means “foreign nut”)

was probably introduced into Britain by the Romans, but it was not cultivated in Britain

until the middle of the seventeenth century.

It is a large tree, often attaining a height of one hundred feet and a girthof twenty feet.

The bark is grey with long vertical fissures.

The branches are very large

and usually curve upwards.

The leaves are very like those of the Ash,

but have a pleasant, walnutty scent.

The flowers appear in May, before the leaves.

The male flowers are long hanging catkins.

Nuts are not borne before  a tree is twenty years old and trees do not bear ripe nuts every year.

The timber is very valuable.

Because all shades of brown are intermingled

to give the most beautiful effects,

it is much used in the making of fine furniture.
