The Giraffe.

Necks and Names

The very long neck of the giraffe is another example of the way in which animals evolve to suit their conditions of life.

The giraffe feeds on leaves, so it has a long neck and long legs to reach the branches of tall trees.

Right down the back of this extraordinary neck the giraffe has a short  bristly mane, and many other animals have manes growing on the back of the neck - the horse, donkey, zebra and some of the antelopes.

The zebra's mane matches its stripes.
