Curfew in the middle ages

Curfew in the middle ages

In the middle ages towns, the mayor and the alderman were supposed to keep order, and they paid the common sergeant and the watchman to do the work for them.

After curfew (which means 'cover fire' and was a law made by the Normans to make the Saxons go to bed early?, no one was allowed to be out on the streets, or the watchman would arrest them.

Curfew was at 8 o'clock in the winter and 9 o'clock in the summer.
