Today on the British isles

  Today on the British isles

is like the crisis

which began in 1638

with Charles I's attempt

to impose the Anglican Prayer Book

on the Calvinist Scots:

what seemed at the time

to be a harmless little vanity project -

like Cameron's referendum -

but which triggered

a chain of events

that ended ten years later

with Charles having his head removed

in front of his former subjects.

As Cromwell later remarked,

"No man goes so far as he who knows

not whither he is going".
