Layers and a waterproof outerlayer are the essentials to staying comfortable outdoors in winter, they don't need to be expensive either, one of the best bits of kit I have had was a cheap cagoule that you can still buy for under £20.00, don't rely on technology to regulate your body temperature as it will sometimes let you down, take off layers as you get hot, put on layers as you cool down and only use waterproofs when it is wet but keep your waterproof trousers on for a while after rain as the wet grass will otherwise soak your clothes, wear a decent pair of boots with waterproof treatmet like dubin, lightweight trainer type of shoes with the latest technology waterproofing may keep you feet dry but they will not keep your feet warm and you will suffer.
