The protests in Belarus have been enormously uplifting - peaceful, joyful, and happy, with women carrying flowers and everyone listening to the woman who is leading it all at the moment, Mariya Kolesnikova. Even if you can’t understand Russian, I highly recommend the journalist Alexei Romanov and his channel on YouTube to get a real taste of the feeling on the streets of Minsk.

But (and it’s a big but), I kind of dread to think what will follow. A crackdown supported (or even instigated) by Putin? Crisis after crisis like Ukraine, or (even worse) Georgia in the 90s? A repeat of the lawlessness of Russia in the 90s? In the best case scenario, Belarus would become another Slovenia or Estonia, but since no one ever seems to learn the lessons of the past, it’s hard to be optimistic.
