Thank god it’s finally rained!

Over the past month and a half I’ve been planting up all the beds and borders - and had no choice but to barrow all the new topsoil onto parched ground. It’s been a struggle to keep everything watered enough that things could establish. But now we’ve had a helping hand. - the garden seems to have swelled, sucked up all the rain, looking plump.

Caulis and Calabrese are bursting out of the net tunnel. Beetroot, courgette, beans, salad crops - all coming on. Squash and pumpkins are in place. Have decided I’ll be grubbing up the strawberries though - effort vs. return. There’s a strawberry farm up the road with a roadside stand - I’ll happily support them and repurpose the space for winter brassicas. Polytunnel is stuffed with tomato plants, they’re loving the Alpaca manure that was dug in. Tomato trial this year limited to three varieties - self selected beefsteak, Roma (which I didn’t know was open pollinated), and Amateur: polytunnel, outdoors in pots, outdoors in the ground. So far the self selected is well ahead of the game.
