England & Wales has some of the strongest consumer protection legislation, absolutely no need for warranties.
For faults that occur after six months you will need evidence that the defect isn't your own fault; so without a manufacturer's notice of an issue you would have to pay for an inspection by an expert, but that will almost always be less than the cost of the warranty.
A simple email to the retailer's manager or head office reminding them of the circumstances and the relevant law, and your intention to take legal action will normally get results - repair/replace/refund.
Otherwise starting legal action in the small claims court is pretty easy.
