Hang the man

They hang the man and flog the woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
Yet let the greater villain loose
That steals the common from the goose

The law demands that we atone
When we take things we do not own
But leaves the lords and ladies fine
Who take things that are yours and mine

The poor and wretched don't escape
If they conspire the law to break
This must be so but they endure
Those who conspire to make the law

They hang the man and flog the woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
And geese will still a common lack
Till they go and steal it back

The UK's "economy" has long ago tipped away from one of meritocratic, productive makers to an economy of lazy speculators, inherited property owners, wannabe landlords and rentier takers, now primarily being built on selling off our nation's assets, land and housing to investors at home and oversees at inflated prices. Property and national assets are our country's last big "export" and forms the basis of the government's debt based asset bubble economy. So long as the bubble is inflating, consumer spending continues.
Making easy money by taking and owning rather than making and doing is deeply ingrained in the national psyche - company law means our companies have to be run for the benefit of rentier shareholders and much of Britain is still very feudal and a good portion of the land and rent wealth is still in the hands of people who's predecessors did a bit of Saxon slashing 1000 years ago.

The majority of Land is not owned by rich land owners but ordinary people who are not rich.

There are 10 million home owners (freehold) so they are going to be punished for working hard and owning their own homes.

A Land Tax will not be fair and will cost a fortune to administer as there are too many variables.

Think of some of the largest areas of land in your town, Parks, Cemeteries, roads, rails tracks, etc.

Then there is peat bogs which cover millions of acres and hold in Carbon and cannot be touched so have no value.

Then there is contaminated land which would cost a fortune to clean,

Then there are all those properties on flood plains or on the crumbling coast, at some point they are going to be worth nothing.

Then there are ancient woodland which can only make a little money if that.

Then there is farmland some of which should be left to recover after growing crops on it for several years.

Land Value Tax is the idea of the small minded envious few who have no real comprehension of land and only see or hear what they want to hear or see.

Next it will be a Universal Basic Income and they will say that is ok they will remove the basic personal allowance and it will be self funding. Just so you know that will be a lie.

Another stupid idea which will not work. Back to Land Value Tax and what they will not tell you, it has been tried before when Land Ownership was far simpler as there was only a few owners in 1692 and guess what - it did not work.

Why?

Again too many variables.

They could not organise themselves out of a paper bag.
