We should have never allowed Facebook
to get away with saying „we are no publisher“.
They are.
Without them, these posts would never see the eyes of other people or they would languish in silence with 7 followers.
Many private blogs have just 9 readers and will never get more, even though they are good and interesting, simply because the competition is so wide and without a company shaping the traffic, people would never achieve many klicks for their content, because nobody would ever find them.
And that is one reason, why facebook, twitter and co clearly are publishers.
Like a real world publisher has a publishing house, they have their platform, like a real world publisher has a catalogue, they have their likes and „most read“ lists.
Plus you have to sign with them and follow their rules to be able to publish in their publishing business.
So they have the last word what is on their platform and what not.
That clearly makes them publishers, too.
That these companies just don‘t CHOSE to check the content they publish, doesn‘t mean they are not responsible for it.
They made a business decision to publish anything, that gets pushed onto them.
Why did they do that?
Because without that, their business idea would not be viable.
That simple.
Our biggest mistake the last years was letting them do what they want without regulating them.
Now we have to claw back civility, accountability and freedom the hard way from them.
Will we learn for the future from this?
I doubt it.
If any politicians will always put money over people and the rest of the world is not powerful enough to stop them and has then to adapt.
I just say chlorinated chicken and food with altered genes...
