The ecosystems that once existed in Britain have been eradicated.
Although there are still people there that care (such as those protecting butterflies, RSPB etc.)
the Brits have long lost their connection
to the natural environment.
Predators and megafauna were hunted
to extinction centuries
(and in some cases millennia) ago.
Bears, wolves, lynx were wiped out
many trees were felled to extinction
in order to produce war materials
and now even hedgehogs are all but gone.
In Finland, there the older generations
still have a close affinity to the forests
(which cover 70% of the land area)
the ecosystems are still alive and well there.
Moose, bears, lynx and wolves
still roam the forests -
although you rarely see them,
you can sense their presence
and it is a thrilling and therapeutic feeling.
