satire is conservative.

satire is conservative.

It might put two fingers up to the powers that be but it is never a challenge to the status quo.

By suggesting the powers can be laughed at, it actually reinforces their hold power by diffusing opposition into passive shrugs or bawdy laughter.

It does not ‘speak truth to power’ the way a political pamphlet campaign or investigative journalism does.

It does not incite violence to overthrow tyranny. It is the recourse of the comfortable and bored.

The artform of the middle-classes who are not (currently) in government.

It is not the artform of the desperate, the poor, the oppressed, the excluded, the people who need radical change and will die for it or kill for it if necessary.

I see nothing for me in this exhibition but then as a housebound disabled person I could never have seen it even if interested and no amount of satire would improve my situation on bit. When will we see the art of revolution?

When will we see blood?
