The earlier visions of purgatory and paradise are distin-
guished from those which followed by the simplicity of
their details.
The first, is alluded to by Bede, and must have been extremely popular
amongst the Anglo-Saxon.
There still exist manuscript copies of the
same history which Bede saw, and which appears to have
been written soon after the date of the vision.
In the tenth century it was translated into Anglo-Saxon,in a manuscript.
