Many of the great cathedrals were once the monastery churches.
You could imagine how big an abbey was for there were many other buildings as well:
The almonry
The almonry was were the money and food were given to the poor.
The cloisters
The cloisters, where were the monks could walk up and down in all weathers and where they taught the young monks.
The infirmary
The infirmary was where the monks looked after sick people
The refectory
The refectory (dining-room) of a large abbey, scores of monks and visitors could sit down to dinner at one time.
