Norman Castle

In order to enter the Norman castle, the Normans had to cross over the moat by the drawbridge.

The Normans would operate the drawbridge by having the soldiers wind up and down from the gatehouse.

Once the drawbridge was down the Normans would then proceed through a great gateway.

A gateway with thick wooden gates

The gateway also had a portcullis.

The portcullis was a strong iron fence which could be drawn upwards to allow the Normans to pass through ..

However if an enemy approached they could quickly lowered down the portcullis
